We are the generation that questioned the killing. We are the generation that has discovered how to stop it. Will we be the generation that does?
„Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. We can be that great generation.“
Dear Friends & Colleagues:
In 2014, a demographically diverse sweep of cities and counties reported save rates from 90% to as high as 99%. These include those taking in a few hundred animals a month to those that take in thousands; communities with human populations of tens of thousands to those exceeding one million in their metro areas; communities including Madison County, AR, Maryville, TN, the Shenandoah Valley in VA, and Jacksonville, FL.
Although I have not crunched the numbers myself, here’s just a small sampling of what newspapers are reporting around the country:

To Save the Planet, Eat Less Meat, Report Urges

For first time, top nutritional panel says American consumers must cut back on red meat to prevent irreversible climate change

To prevent ruinous climate change and stave off an influx of preventable chronic diseases, Americans must reduce their meat intake and switch to a sustainable, plant-based diet, the top U.S. nutritional panel has announced for the first time.

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which convenes every five years, released its newest report Thursday calling for Americans to change the way they think about food and make the…

Lobster becoming a New Year delicacy for China’s rising middle class

Global News

PORTLAND, Maine – Now on the menu in Beijing for Chinese New Year: lots and lots of American lobster.

Exports of U.S. lobster to China have rocketed in the past few years, largely to satisfy the appetites of the communist country’s growing middle class, to whom a steamed, whole crustacean – flown in live from the United States – is not just a festive delicacy and a good-luck symbol but also a mark of prosperity.

And that’s good news for Maine, far and away the nation’s No. 1 lobster state, where the boom has put more money in the pockets of lobstermen and kept shippers and processors busy during the usually slack midwinter months.

For Stephanie Nadeau, owner of The Lobster Co., a wholesaler in Arundel, Maine, the demand has meant 14-hour nights spent stuffing wriggling lobsters into crates so they can reach China in time for the Lunar New…

What is this dog thinking? Scientists now have some fascinating answers

From the myth of the ‘guilty look’ to the exciting discovery of dogs evolving an inbuilt affection for humans, canine psychology is finding out more all the time

Probing the emotional lives of animals is new territory for biologists. A couple of decades ago, emotions were off-limits: scientists studying animal behaviour focused on what they could see animals doing, not how they might be feeling. Yet questions of animal emotion underpin animal welfare – as Jeremy Bentham wrote in 1789, “The question is not, ‘can they reason?’ nor…
