Denmark’s Drug-Free Pigs

Later On

Barry Estabrook writes in the NY Times:

PRESIDENT OBAMA didn’t need to issue a $1.2 billion National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, which he did last week, to figure out how the United States could reduce the antibiotic-resistant bacteria created by the country’s agriculture industry. He could have simply spent a day with Kaj Munck, a Danish hog farmer.

Mr. Munck is a husky, loquacious man who lives about an hour south of Copenhagen. His operation looks and smells a lot like the factory pig farms I have visited in the American Midwest. The 12,000 pigs he raises each year — making his operation larger than the average American producer — live in cramped stalls with hard floors inside low-slung warehouselike structures. Mr. Munck can produce pork at prices low enough to compete in the same international markets as American pork. In fact, a large number…

Pit Bull Kidnapped In 2013 Miraculously Comes Home — With 10 Puppies

By Sarah V SchweigFollow

Fed nothing but chicken feed and held captive for more than a year, a resilient pit bull has finally been rescued from kidnappers and returned home to her family.

WBTW13Nina Louise was stolen in December of 2013 from the front yard of Northam and April Morris’s home in Bennettsville, South Carolina, reports local news station WBTW 13. The family couldn’t believe their eyes when, watching the nightly news, they saw footage of the bone-thin dog being rescued on Saturday from a massive cockfighting bust in Marlboro County, South Carolina — along with her 10 tiny puppies.

‚Alien-Like Creature‘ From Tragic Viral Video Has Been Rescued

By Stephen Messenger

An endangered bear with a mysterious illness has been found and rescued more than two months after footage of the „alien-like“ animal went viral online.

„The bear is in a good and safe place,“ Nickson Robi, from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), told The Dodo. „She has eaten the food and drank the water we gave. But she still is hairless and sick, and we need to find out what the sickness is.“

YouTube/The Borneo Post SEEDSThe „strange“ animal was first spotted in late January by a group of plantation workers near the village of Sibu in Borneo. Uncertain of what she was, the workers reportedly hit her with sticks, driving her back into the forest.

A video showing the animal fleeing her attackers has been viewed online nearly…

McDonald’s Downfall: Even Kids Aren’t Eating Fast Food Anymore

mcdonalds-kids-fast-food

Despite the billions in endless marketing on all major children’s programming avenues, even kids are eating less disease-breeding fast food. That’s the declaration from the latest statistical study on fast food consumption that comes along just as McDonald’s continues to lose profits month after month.

And we’re not talking about a small change here. You have to remember that the fast food industry absolutely thrives on convincing children to eat their chemical-laden garbage. It’s the heart of their ‘unchanging market’ as I would call it. A market that, quite unfortunately, cannot process the reality of what they’re eating.

After all, how many times do you recall chowing down on some french fries as a young child and only thinking about the next bite? You weren’t concerned with the toxic ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, MSG, trans fat, plastic yoga mat chemicals, preservatives…

Here’s One More Reason These Friendly Animals Don’t Belong In Labs

By Ameena Schelling

Here’s another reason why rats shouldn’t be used in experiments: They can recognize pain on each other’s faces.

In a recent study, researchers took photographs of rats grimacing from an electric shock to their foot. They then took photos of the same rat in a neutral position. These images were scattered around a sort of maze, and other rats were given the chance to explore the apparatus.

What they found was that rats would spend less time in chambers with pictures of the pained rat than chambers with pictures of the neutral rat, indicating that the rodents could recognize pain in the face of other rats and avoided looking at them.

Brutal Animal Abuse Would Stay Secret Under State’s Ridiculous Measure

Yet another state is trying to push through an ag-gag bill, adding to the rush of legislation that aims to keep agriculture’s routine animal abuse behind closed doors.

The Property Protection Act, which was introduced to the North Carolina senate on Thursday, would outlaw unauthorized videotaping or audio recording on private property, making it illegal to document abuse on factory farms or even obtain proof that such abuse ever occurred.

The bill also prohibits applying for jobs for any purpose other than a „bona fide intent“ of seeking work, and obtaining and using such unauthorized footage, effectively preventing all undercover investigations.

Flickr/Tobias Akerboom (at hutmeelz)Like most ag-gag legislation, the bill professes to reinforce property rights but would in practice act as a gag order…
